The announcement was made before the World Intellectual Property Day celebration at the Library of Congress.

In a post for the technology blog Techdirt, internet consultant Joshua Metzger noted that the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals last month unanimously upheld a district court’s ruling that Veoh was protected under the safe harbor provisions of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). While Veoh was victorious, Metzger explains how a few months after its win in district court, the company’s leadership “surveyed the war torn company” and decided to sell the assets and shut its doors. Veoh did not lose the case, but Metzger noted that it also did not receive any recourse for the substantial amount it had to invest in litigation.
“The judicial system provided Universal with what it could not achieve on a level business playing field,” Metzger wrote. “Veoh won the case but is not around to continue to grow. That is wrong.”
