The patent litigation battle between Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. dominated a majority of the headlines concerning mobile phone technology, but Bloomberg News reported on May 23 that Nokia Oyj is suing rival mobile phone maker HTC Corp. for selling products in the United States that allegedly infringe three of its patents. According to the complaint, the three patents are in regards to “terminal, method and computer program product for interacting with a signaling tag.” Bloomberg noted that Espoo, Finland-based Nokia lost its 14-year title as world’s biggest seller of mobile phones to Samsung in 2011, and is trying to expand revenue from its patent portfolio.
Nokia sued HTC last year for allegedly infringing on multiple patents, but the new complaint filed in the US District Court in California claims HTC infringes on Nokia patents with 10 of its smartphones, including the HTC One as well as the HTC First with Facebook Home. The technology news website ZDNet reported that the patents relate to chips made by Broadcom and Qualcomm that feature in HTC’s flagship One device, and if the case is successful, it could lead to affected devices like the HTC One being banned from sale.
“Nokia has filed further cases in the United States alleging that HTC products infringe additional Nokia patents,” Nokia said in a statement to ZDNet. “We began actions against HTC in 2012 to end the unauthorised use of our proprietary innovations and technologies. Since then, despite the German courts confirming infringements of Nokia patents in HTC products, HTC has shown no intention to end its practices, instead it has tried to shift responsibility to its suppliers. We have therefore taken these further steps to hold HTC accountable for its actions.”
